Rental nan mo shinai hito ep.12 (Final) + mini-stories (Bonus)

The final episode is up! I feel a little sad that it’s over, but at the same time I’m really happy with how it ended, right up till the last scene in the credits roll lol. It’s a 10/10 series for me, and it’s kinda ironic cos initially I wasn’t even intending to watch this (perhaps because I didn’t find the poster appealing, and I wasn’t particularly interested in the cast as well). But I’m glad I gave the first episode a try. Best decision ever lol. I hope you have enjoyed this series as much as I did. Truly a gem of a drama!

I have a couple of notes for this episode:

  • “Maru” is the circle 〇, a symbol that means OK/true/good/correct. You might have seen it on Japanese television quiz shows when the contestant gets an answer correct. In school when teachers are marking papers, they draw circles over their students’ correct answers. On the other hand, “batsu” is the X symbol that means no/false/wrong/incorrect. Japanese use these “maru” (circle) and “batsu” (cross) symbols in hand gestures as well, to represent their agreement or disagreement. In this episode, I’ve translated “maru” as “correct”.
  • A salon is a gathering of individuals to engage and increase their knowledge through conversation. The salon culture flourished in Europe in the 17th and 18th century. An “online salon” is kinda like an online version of this. In Japan, “online salon” is a generic term for a monthly membership fee-based community. They can be hosted by writers, businessmen, athletes, bloggers, and other individuals who have specialized knowledge or skills and experience in certain fields. Sometimes they are used as fan clubs for artists, idols, models, TV personalities and athletes.

P.S. The real Rental-san made another cameo appearance in this final episode!

Here are the bonus mini-stories! There are three in all, little 30s-ish clips, and only the second one has dialogue and the third has on-screen text. Special thanks to champkun for providing the raw for the second and third ones. The quality of the first one isn’t great, but watchable. Nonetheless, please enjoy! <3

Thank you for subbing the whole drama!! Thanks for your notes too.
I’m glad there’s a happy ending but he could have come up with that on his own… it would have been like “oh, he actually tried to do something about the situation”. Here, he stayed true to himself and did nothing. Someone else did. I guess his good actions and his wife’s kindness and selflessness reached someone or the universe, their positivity attracted positivity. But yeah, it’s a TV drama in the end ^^

Thank you so much for subbing this drama. I am Masuda’s fan for many many years, but I did not think that I would enjoy it so much as I did. It is definitely one of my favorite dramas now – so many small details that make it perfect.
